Re: Nice sight : Late season visitors

Yeah, its fun. Some of the adults come here at night to see the chicks in still, but take off soon after. They do come in the morning to socialize and talk about their upcoming trip. During the day its a ghost town. Since they are roosting somewhere, be worth while to find the roost...if your area ...

Re: Nice sight : Late season visitors

I had about 10 visiting again yesterday for quite a while.during later part of morning and into early afternoon- almost looked like nest building going on. They were popping in and out of compartments like trying to figure out which ones to move into. I’ve never had this much post season action. Fun...

Maybe they saw you, and stopped by to say "THANK YOU !! We will see you next year !!".
I like to think so. They had great housing this year. :)

Nice sight : Late season visitors

What a nice morning.. was checking on my bluebirds (nest w/ 4 chicks) when 10 martins came in and perched on the powerline right behind our house. Havent noticed any since a day or two after July 5th , so it was a nice sound to hear. They swirled around for a few minutes then flew off into the sky. ...

Re: Questions from a PM nube

The crescent shaped is the better of the two. Unless you know starlings aren’t going to be an issue. The little ones might peek out, but they wont go farther unless it’s maybe a house with a railed front porch (like SK barns). They tend to walk outside of those in some cases, but Not gourds (at leas...

Re: Inexperienced sub adults - return?

Just one of those things. I believe SAs run on pure instinct and inexperience is not the issue. But that’s just my opinion.

But it’s good you’re getting residents and you’re on your way to getting a colony started. :)

Congrats! Looks like you started with 4 pair, this year 9 pairs- expect that number to increase over the years.
Very nice,
Tom
Correct.. Last year I was finally able to get some pairs at my new location after about 5 years of striking out. This year was fantastic.

Thanks!

Re: My 2021 final numbers

Congrats on your season! I see your first arrival was on January 31. I had 10 pairs by February 4. That freeze was devastating for you too, I’m sure. Glad to see it ended well for both of us.. Rob Yeah.. I had a male that may have survived the freeze. He was there before the freeze - and a couple d...

Re: High death rates

I had a lot of losses last year. Very frustrating. I assumed it was mites because a few jumped way too early. But I also found multiples dead in the compartments. So frustrating. I know how you feel. But honestly, you’re doing all you can.. sone things are completely out of your control. I know this...

Re: High death rates

I’m in South Louisiana and had a very good year. I had just under 40 hatchlings and lost 6 in the nests. The rest fledged. I had no adults die, except for the scores that died in the major freeze we had down here. I had one ASY male at the time, and not certain but he may have made it :). I had mult...

Re: The very last Fledge

Yep.. I saw them going down to the yard and maybe feeding him. Definitely checking and watching over him. His second flight seemed much better, seeing how he “doubled” the distance - 2 backyards down the way. :) He seems to be in a small tree which is better than ground. Who knows.. maybe he’ll make...

Re: My First Successful Season

Congratulations to you. When I had my first year end I felt like a very proud parent. I think I only had a nest and 4 or 5 fledges. But it was so satisfying.

Later on, get everything cleaned up and replace anything that needs replacing, while it’s all out and you can look it over well

Re: Advice on new set up for 2022

I like their gourds, but not the poles.

I think they sell a square aluminum pole.. but I may be mistaken.

I’d pass on the round pole as well. Spend a bit more money and get a quality square pole and gourd rack. Those things are well worth the money.

The pole will outlast you. :)

Re: The very last Fledge

Poor fella.. jumped and tried to fly again.. he appears to be 2 houses down/ possibly in the bushes or a small tree. Can’t access that yard. I I see the male hanging out on the power line behind the yard chirping away. I can here the fledge making the ”cheep” “cheep” noises. He flew quite a bit fart...

Re: Fledges everywhere

About that odd PM chirp.. i wonder if it has to do with communicating with the fledglings but that’s just a wild guess. I notice the parents make a specific chirp when they are trying to get the chicks to jump and fly. And this year nearly all of my males were SY. 6 out of 9. Probably had a lot to d...

The very last Fledge

I was able to watch the very last 2 of 5 fledge this morning around 7:30ish. The first shimmied out on the porch and bolted away followed by the male parent. The little fella looked strong and I lost site of them as they flew to the trees. As for the last little fella, not so good- “he” eventually s...
