Re: Put up a Martin House for Looks... it's covered in Birds! Now What?

Awesome MGM you're in for a ride if you stick with it and I hope you do!; as plhdave mentioned it's a labor of love and involves the the bad such as cleaning out a full martin house post season. Keep that in mind as you ponder future expansion! Martin poo like you've never seen! But in the end the p...

Re: Sunset House

Hello Carlton- I have two Sunset Inn houses on a multipurpose pole with gourds underneath. I think they're a great martin house. They don't come with Conley entrances which I prefer so I made (cut out) the factory crescent entrances larger and put Conley II entrance plates over them. The martins use...

Re: Put up a Martin House for Looks... it's covered in Birds! Now What?

MJM CONGRATS and good job putting a house up! Thinking the swallows nesting in the gourd likely are Tree Swallows as opposed to barn swallows. You'll definitely want to consider putting some sort of removable cylinder predator guard with cap about 5ft up on the pole. This can be done anytime and wil...

Re: Transplanting Martins from one colony to a new one

Technically it's questionable whether even performing nest checks is legal; please dismiss/ let alone the idea of transporting martins. But I'm with you, I waited 7 yrs at my home and every thought crosses one's mind.

Re: Nest building began this weekend in Plano

hey whippy, try putting down tamale wrappers. Cut them into 1 inch wide 2 inch long. Martins love them. Fun to watch, got a chance to see them snatch them up at mr barrows place. I'm on it tomorrow. That'll be cool to watch. It's the little things in life that bring us so much pleasure. Than...

Re: Can't believe it, but I have one hanging around

Hang in there Ryan it's been a weird season weather-wise this spring in Iowa for sure and migration indeed seems to be lagging. I have observed no sy martins to date.

Re: Help with house design

I don't believe the roof and/or porches will hurt anything. Stay the course and pray! But I also recommend measuring the height of the entrance openings. This means measuring from the top of the floor to the top of the crescent opening to make sure they're at least 1-3/16inches. Photos can be deceiv...

Re: Trio Mini Castle

Hello Dave & Tom. Thanks for chiming in! I plan to use Conley plates after widening/enlarging the existing hole of the Trio doors. The doors on this house are not hinged. I would use Conley tunnels with porches but not wanting to remove the factory perches at this time. Tom- even with Conley plates ...

Hello Martin Friends- any Trio jedi masters seen this style mini castle before? I have no idea the year these came out. The doors fasten unlike any Trio I've encountered before. I plan to enlarge cavities and use Conley plates for sreh with wing guards. I'd appreciate any tips on options for wing gu...

Thoughts on Fledging Age

For some reason I had in my mind that fledge age for Purple martins was 26-32 days of age. I have a late nest here in Iowa that consisted of 4 nestlings. Adult martins for the nest are both sy/ second yr . One nestling was lost early I believe due to sy male removal. The three remaining nestlings ha...

Re: First gourd fledged and new eggs

Fledged martins have been known to (and I've observed as well) return and spend nights in same and other possible open cavities for up to around 2 wks. As a colony grows and crowding becomes an issue some fledged hang about at night and get preyed upon by owls 😠

Randy74 you should ultimately be in good shape with whatever amount of patience will be required for your site. I'm a firm believer that if you're seeing martin visitors/lookers each season it's only a matter of time. Not knowing exactly how much time is obviously the tough part. Meanwhile all one c...

Re: ASY male showed up today...

The Dawnsong happens once the first arriving pairs have laid eggs and the females are incubating. The males fly up early in the mornng, before sunrise, as this is the time of day when sounds travels the farthest. He is trying to recruit more martins to the colony so that he can mate with the hens, ...
