Re: Eggs not hatching, Hawks?

Eggs are sometimes infertile though the pair will often attempt to renest if that is the case and it is still early in the season. Females can also be lost to illness and accidents. Only the female has a brood patch for properly incubating eggs so without her the eggs will not hatch.

Re: Troyer H. Gourds.

We had problems with Troyer horizontal gourds leaking around the hanging hole even though they were hung on Troyer hanging arms and fit tightly. I purchased PMCA "leak guards" and sealed them with Lexel but they stilled leaked. (I found out later Lexel does not adhere properly to the kind of plastic...

Re: hawk resistant swallow boxes

Are the boxes out in the open or near some trees? Do you know what kind of hawk or can you describe its relative size or behavior? TreeSwallowProjects.com has a lot of good info and you may find the "Predator Protection" page helpful. Sialis.org has good info about bluebirds though some of it is app...

Re: Something has been going on in one of my rooms....

If that is a piece of landscape fabric, aka weed cloth, and it is still in the nest I'd recommend removing it. It tends to unravel and can get wrapped around toes, wings, and legs.

Re: Tree Swallow Relocation Strategy

If all else fails give Larry Melcher's method a try — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGe51zE8Ppo . TM, there is still plenty of time. The subadults haven't arrived yet. There's also the possibility that an adult pair could lose their housing or abandon due to predation. Our first pair were adults w...

Re: Cool picture I took. Add yours.

Here's my favorite purple martin roost photo in my colony. Do you still try to discourage them from roosting outside? I'll bet you don't have a buzzard nesting under the deck of your porch at your ranch house. Turkey or Black? We looked outside one day and saw a fish flopping around in the yard. Si...

We've never even had a tree swallow stop by for a visit. We'd be happy to host some.

Do you accept birds euthanized using carbon dioxide gas? I believe they are safe for consumption.

Re: Winch Question

We already have a brake winch, pulley, and wire cable. We even have the winch mounted to the pole. We just can't get a vehicle out there to install the pulley at the top because the ground is too saturated. Putting the polyester rope on the winch was going to be a temporary one-season-only measure u...

Re: Wet BO9 Gourds

We have a few Bo9s with tunnels and cooling caps and they are always wet inside after it rains. I don't know if the rain is running down the hanging arm and in through the cooling cap holes or if it sheets in through the entrance. One faces north and the other south yet they both get equally wet. It...

Re: Winch Question

Thank you for the responses. My FILs rack has the polyester rope and four-part pulley system sold my the PMCA installed on it. I'm not afraid the rope will break as it has only been used one season and is of good quality. I'm afraid it will slip out of our hands or my FIL, who is not in the best of ...

Winch Question

We finished my FIL's owl guard today. Unfortunately, it added quite a bit of weight to his rope & pulley setup. I'm concerned the rope could slip out of our hands causing us an injury or the rope could come untied at the cleat causing the rack to fall and injure the birds. The ground is too saturate...

Having that info can help you avoid attracting them. We've found the type of feeder and where ...

Re: Martins pair for season... or life?

Thanks for the replies, and my question probably is best addressed by actual banding studies. I got the dimorphism angle from a professor while working on my masters degree long ago. it seems to hold here with our geese who arrive each February with their last year brood tagging along. the pair fir...
