Re: Another Year Full of HOPE

Good luck. It’s like the big lottery jackpots. We can’t win if we don’t play. Haha

Re: new birds

I’m not sure if feeding them is detrimental to my attempts to be a Martin landlord, but i have read that house sparrows do not travel too far. The ones that visit my feeder only travel about five more feet as they fall to the ground. Same with the starlings. So that may be an advantage of feeding th...

Re: new birds

I would guess a coopers or sharpshinned hawk. The head resembles them as well as the steely blue color. But not sure

new birds

eve.grosbeaks.png I know this is the martin forum, and i am a wannabee. But we had these birds show up 11-16-20. I guessed by the beaks that they were a grosbeak, but had never seen them. We reside in central PA and thought i would share. I guess they come farther south during an irruption year whe...

Re: Baby Bluebirds made it through the cold.

Good job with the blue birds Doug. As a Martin wannabe, I have to enjoy the little things. Haha. We had a similar experience with four BB chicks. They hatched around April 18 and soon after we had the temps in the Mid 20’s for a day or day and a few inches of snow. I was afraid to look. We feed othe...

Great news Toy!! Get him through the next few days and looks like a warming trend on Friday. The next several days with highs approaching 60 degrees.

Re: First Tree Swallow Today

I expected to them before this, but today was the first tree swallows I’ve seen. Two males. When I first saw them, in the distance soaring, I thought i was seeing martins. A colony about three miles from me made a report a few days ago, so a few are nearby. I keep watching for Toy’s report any day.

Re: First Tree Swallow Today

Hey Doug. I just sent a text to a friend this morning saying how I hadn't seen a tree swallow yet this year and the martins were early and already in PA. I expect to see some TS's by Friday

Re: SY's still migrating

Thanks for the hope Toy, but I have basically written this year off.... again. This is a very frustrating hobby. I have only seen one martin. Lots of resources put into this with very little return. I have heard others say that they have done what they can and will let whatever is going to happen, h...

Re: Purple Martin or Barn Swallow?

They are similar and related but martins are almost twice the size of TS. Look at the identification section under research and I believe you will see. The TS always have the white breast. The TS still truck me from time to time into thinking I’m seeing a Martin. There is also a TS protocol as well ...

Re: SY pair visited today

That’s definitely a good sign. If they are entering, they are comfortable with their surroundings. I had two circle out housing a few days ago but couldn’t be sure it was a pair. Could have been two SY males.

First martin of 2018

Our first SY male visited for a few minutes this morning about 9am. Did several fly by’s and then landed a couple times on the T14. He didn’t return as of 2pm but we had to leave. I didn’t get a picture but had a good look at him. He wasn’t vocal at all. I was confident in the ID and made an SY report

Re: No interest in my cavities

I am by no way experienced since I am not a landlord but like you, have been trying for five years. Sounds like you are doing the normal things. Is the housing you are offering, similar to what nearby landlords have?
That’s interesting that the B.B.s learn not to be trapped.

Re: 2nd Starling Attack tonight!

I cant imagine what that was like. Ive been trying for five years now to get martins an if i ever get martins and if something like that would happen, not sure how i would react. I have two T-14's up now. The new one has SRE conley 2's and the other one is round holes, but only one hole on that hous...

Did you remove any other nesting material, or just what was blocking the entrance? Hope your right about the SY's coming. I have been watching but no martins yet. The starlings just wont let up. four shot in the past two days. After I shoot any that have tried to call my yard home, it seems in 3 or ...
