Re: All my martins are dying. Any advice?

I flip both crickets and meal worms, but prefer the meal worms because the bulk pricing is more economical on the live meal worms. Patience, Patience Patience is the best advice concerning birds to learn and understand "Flipping". You will most likely need to make a significant purchase of meal worm...

Re: An Eastern Kingbird.....

White-out, I do my flipping around the colony. The birds learn to watch my actions to determine when the flipping is going to begin. They will learn to observe my actions below the colony, as they watch from their perches They learn to drop or jump from their perch to pursue the flying meal worms as...

Re: An Eastern Kingbird.....

I have had a pair of Eastern Kingbirds around my home colony for going on 4 seasons now. My Martin colony is very well established with 96 nest opportunities in T-14's and also in Troyer gourds. The Martins and the kingbirds do have arguments and flying spats that are really something to watch. The ...

Re: Another killing May in PA

Guys, Not good to hear these updates of birds that just cannot survive this cold wet weather. I did not take my towers down today because things warmed up a bit yesterday afternoon and most of my birds were out searching for insects Monday afternoon. I flipped over 400 extra large , live meal worms ...

Re: Cold weather feeding lesson

Randy, Interesting that your birds would not eat the beetles you flipped to them if their wings were not exposed. Have you ever tried to flip meal worms?? Much easier than collecting beetles, and hungry martins do not miss seeing wings and they will be after them quickly if they are hungry and have ...

Re: Ohio weather

Here in southeastern Ohio, the weather has been terrible for over 3 days. Even if your birds have been out flying in search of food, that does not mean they are being successful finding enough insects to survive. After approx. 3 days the posture of your birds will tell you if they are in trouble and...

Re: 16+ yr established site now having tree swallow issues

DrrachE, Scatter bluebird houses mounted on half inch conduit posts around your property in the open areas. This technique has helped me to win the battle of "air space" versus the T.S. for years now. As martins arrive, you will observe your TS's move on to the alternative housing away from the mart...

If you really want to have fun, add flipping meal worms to your morning or afternoon "meeting" with your martins as you walk around your colony.

Re: Just in time for Easter

Great to see my landlord friends down south with eggs . We are suffering terrible winter weather the past 3 nights with temperatures in the low 20's. Trying to help what few birds I have in my home colony with very aggressive supplemental feeding program multiple times the past 3 days . Flipping lar...

Hey Doug, I am getting worried in my part of southeastern Ohio. My birds are late if compared to history. I had one ASY arrive alone on the 20th. I know he was mine. Banded, and he caught the first meal worm that I flipped at him. The bad news is that I left the area for a couple days to go to India...

Re: Iowa seeing martins early. New reports

Dav.e, Glad to hear that Iowa birds are starting to get to you. I hope the weather gives you a break, and things will warm up. Here in southeastern Ohio, I am getting nervous. Late arrival for my main colony is after the 25th. I had one ASY male bird that was one of my birds land in the colony on th...

Doug,
Your returning bird is a bit earlier than last year over where you are. I hope my southeastern Ohio birds hold of at least another week to two weeks!! Did the bird catch crickets immediately when you flipped to him or did you have to re-train him some ??

Re: My Amish friend

SSmartin,

I have some Amish friends over in the same area of Ohio that "unk" is talking about, and they try to control mites. They treat their T-14's with Seven when they put white pine needles in the compartments just before birds show up in this area every spring.

The small size tends to point to a Merlin, or a male sharp shinned hawk. I have them all up here in Ohio. We have sharp shinns and Coopers that cause the most damage. Merlins are also seen, but I have only seen one on my farm. The Buteos like Red Tailed hawks and Red shouldered hawks can also cause ...

You guys in Louisiana are really doing well! To overcome the terrible weather that took the lives of who knows how many martins is really something. Way to hang in there! Hold some of those birds down south so they don't get up here in Ohio while it is cold and wet!! Just delay them some until the e...

Southern Landlords, I have always wondered how often you southern landlords have groups of birds that stop over at your colonies for a few days, and then move on their way north. I have often wondered if birds that are migrating just tend to "feed" their way north, or do they actually notice colonie...

Wow! What a beautiful house and a work of art! Not very practical with probably no way to clean out the compartments, but this is still a thing of beauty, and would be worth a fancy penny! I would like to see some one purchase it, and figure out how to up date it so it could be home to a colony of M...

Re: Been crazy around here with the weather

Up here in Ohio, we are hoping that our birds will hold off at least until the third week in March so we are not in the cold weather mess like you all have had to deal with down south. We had a very bad 10 days of very severe weather last year that killed a number of early arrivals in our colonies. ...
