Re: Getting them to Stay?

I played the dawn song CD for 2 years without having a nesting pair, but had frequent visitors (also, too many tree swallows that kept such visitors at bay). The following year I played the dawn song each day through July when I hand one nesting pair. The next year I had 4 nesting pairs, but switche...

Re: shooting sparrow with shotgun?

The info I'm providing is what works for me at my site and for the design of my colony and may not necessarily be doable or recommended at other colony sites, I'm just sharing my personal experiences. Most of the starlings (or HS) I shoot at my colony are shot in the weeks before the earliest martin...

Re: Will PM s co-habitate with tree swallows?

You indicated you've been attracting martins to your site for 35 years, but only had visitors and no nesting martins last year and only 2 successful nesting seasons in 35 years...is that correct? I'm not clear what the actual PM occupancy history of your long-term PM housing has been. If you've only...

Re: shooting sparrow with shotgun?

How long have you had martins at your colony? If they've been established for a year or two, it should be okay to shoot a shotgun around the colony and not scare them permanently away. If they are martins new to your site I'd be a bit more hesitant shooting a gun until they are building nests or egg...

Re: Cold weather feeding lesson

Tom - I tried putting thawed beetles in a tray on a feeding platform a few times last year with eggshells and watched a few martins pick up some beetles and toss them from the tray to the ground. None were eaten, as I know how may beetles I put in each tray and was able to account for all of them at...

Cold weather feeding lesson

I have a growing 5-year-old PM colony in northern SD and birds arrived at my site ~two weeks early this year (April 2) during warm conditions (70's), but now the weather has turned cold over the past 5 days with daytime highs in the 30's and 40's (overnight lows in the teens and 20's), with cold and...

Re: Early Dawn Activity

Jmmaly - I have all round holes in my martin housing and have plenty of starlings around. However I work from home and live in a rural setting and can shoot starlings with a shotgun. I typically shoot about 3 dozen starlings each spring (I've got about 24 so far, so might exceed that number this yea...

Re: TO PLAY OR NOT

As long as the martins at your colony seem not to be bothered by playing the CD, I'd keep playing it. Like others have said, until you have double digit numbers of martins at your colony, it's a good thing to keep playing the CD, especially when your resident pair is out feeding. Perhaps you could t...

Re: 16+ yr established site now having tree swallow issues

The 3 bluebird boxes within the radius of my 10 martin house poles are anywhere from 10-20 feet from the base of the closest martin house pole (basically equal distance between two martin house poles). My martin house poles are each about 20-40 feet apart. The 6 bluebird houses outside the perimeter...

Re: 16+ yr established site now having tree swallow issues

In my opinion, your best bet to reduce tree swallow competition for your martin gourds is to "saturate" your yard with alternative nest site options for the TS. I have 3 "bluebird" boxes attached to posts situated within the perimeter of my martin housing (one in the middle, and one each on opposite...

Re: Low temps that they can surivive

I'm not aware of any documented minimum low ambient temperature readings that will cause the death of a healthy martin. I would suspect a martin that was able to get adequate food during daylight hours could survive a night or two of down to sub-zero temperatures if they had protection from wind/ele...

Re: Using Dawnsong when scouts are arriving?

I recommend to play the dawn song or daytime chatter CD anytime martins are shown as arriving on the PM scout arrival map in your area. I established my colony with use of the martin CDs and decoys. I played it daily from April through June - the first year I had a SY male stay for 3+ weeks while pl...

Re: White pine straw vs Yellow pine straw

I use Ponderosa pine needles (fairly rigid, somewhat pointy and 5-6 in long) for pre-nest material in my cavities. Martins don't seem to mind at all. I've tried some wheat straw as well, martins used both types of cavities in the proportion offered, so no obvious preference by the martins at my colo...

Re: Interference

An additional practice that might help lessen the TS aggression towards any martins that might stop at your housing is to place a number of PM decoys on and near your martin housing and play the daytime chatter and/or dawn song CD as much as you can throughout the day. In theory the TS will become a...

Re: Training Martin's to take food...how?

First of all, I'd like to say that I'm sorry to hear of all the hardship folks are dealing with due to the extreme cold weather occurring in our country's south. I'm also saddened to hear how this weather is causing stress and mortality to many of our avian friends. Hopefully conditions will rapidly...

Re: New Update Electronic Prognosticator Available

I tried the updated link and was able to access the spreadsheets this time. I have a few years' of past data that I can play with, as martins won't be in this part of the country for another two months or so.

Thanks Roger.

I too have tried to following the new and old links, and just get a message from OneDrive indicating: "This item might not exist or is no longer available. This item might have been deleted, expired, or you might not have permission to view it. Contact the owner of this item for more information".

Re: Alpha Male ??

Birds in my colony tend to get more aggressive towards me the closer to fledging their young get. However they settle down after I'm under the housing for a few minutes, but if my dogs walk under the housing, the entire colony will "mob-bomb" them until they are 35 yards from the colony. During egg ...

Re: Wood Ducks?

Good work! Wouldn't it have been easier to just make the hole in the unoccupied attic compartment a little bigger for the hen wood duck to squeeze into rather than building a new house? If you haven't already, put 3-4 inches of wood chips or shavings in the bottom of the wood duck nest box, as...

Re: Continue Dawn Song?

If your pair of martins seem to be fine with the CD playing, keep playing it, it might help attract another bird or two when your resident pair is away from your site out feeding. I played my martin CDs for the first three years of my colony (up until about July 1 each year). First year I had a SY m...
