Re: T 14 House tray expearment Pic's

Hi Unk Bond, I wanted to thank you for posting these experimental designs. These new trials and ideas are what makes change in the world of purple martins. Experimentation is encouraged and I appreciate all you have worked on. Whenever I try to male something new for my martins, the number one rule ...

Re: White pine straw vs Yellow pine straw

I want to start by saying I'm not an expert on yellow pine needles. I live in Iowa and we use the white pine needles after they turn light brown in color after falling to the ground. I did look at images of the yellow pine needles and they appear to be extremely similar to the white pine needles. If...

Re: Cold spell down douth

Habsboy,
Your martin will be perfectly fine, since they take off at a much later time. Martin migrate over a long time as a whole, but they only take about a week to get to your place from Brazil. The migration south during our fall and winter months take longer.

Re: Wing entrapment

Hi Brent,
No worries. I re-read your thread and realized that they are attached to the exterior on the porch and therefore are just fine. I was thinking you had them on the interior which may not have had any traction. Long story short is things should be fine with your set up.

For those that are not bi-lingual. Here is the above translation. I speak two languages. " Hola. Me llamo Pedro. Yo soy un amigo de MartinBro. Si. Yo tengo mucha informacion para ti. Mis martins llegan a mi rancho sobre el quince de enero. Ellos salen de la casa sobre el primero de julio. Los Martin...

Re: Refurbishing Trio – Graphic Photo Warning

On a note about paint for the aluminum exterior. I believe that aluminum needs a paint that has etching in order for the paint to stick and not peel off. Correct me if I'm crazy and got it all wrong. lol.

Hi Brent,
Traction is important. Just a reminder. I assumed you had already taken that into consideration.

Migration just south of Texas border arrival times.

I got to thinking about the migration north from Brazil and if there are records of arrival dates in Mexico. I know that a small percent of martins actually return to their homes / gourds in Mexico. The martins just don't start setting up house as soon as they cross into the state of Texas at Browns...

Re: Meal worms from Walmart question.

Mealworms are fine for supplement feeding. Crickets are a better option. You can also scramble eggs into small pieces; but never use oil to scramble eggs because martins have a difficult time digesting oils of any sort.

Re: Just got approved

Hi Don, SSMartin is right when he says expand those compartment to a 12 inch depth. You will lose some rooms, but gain martins easier. I should back up here and say, welcome to the martin hobby. There is much to read and learn on the website. Lots of stuff like sparrow control, supplement feeding du...

Re: Refurbishing Trio – Graphic Photo Warning

It is good to see you refurbishing the old houses. I assume you expanded the compartment sizes to 12 inches in depth. Maybe you already had and I just overlooked. Congrats on the work as I know it is no small undertaking. I re-did four grandpa style metal houses and they now look drastically differe...

pmn,
Wow!!! One year in with huge success is great. Many landlords wait years to get their first nesting pair. Glad to hear everything is going fine.

Hi Kegger,
Gald you enjoyed it. About every two weeks a new bird will be introduced. It just happened that the last one was on martins.

Re: At what cold temperature should I be concerned?

Hi Brent, The previous poster was right on line in thinking. "I don’t think it’s so much the actual temperature but the fact they can’t feed below a certain temperature since insects would not be active at those temperatures. So after a few days of fasting they simply can’t maintain their body heat ...

Re: Distance from existing colony to start new colony

On the phone conversation with Andrew Troyer he mentioned that the SY martins will want to be where the action is. They thrive on the closeness of a colony. I assume the SY martins will see the other set up as a separate colony.
