Re: Pasty Butt

Another weather-related problem you good folks up north must deal with. Its just hot, hot, hot! down here. After the first set of 10 nests have just finished fledging, we have a 2bl-nester that just hatched all 4 eggs. Hope they can fend-off the sub-adult males and tolerate the heat. I put an old ya...

Re: Single SY Male Purple Martins On The Rampage

Steve, Over the years I have read your posts and others regarding this behavior. I have never experienced it before ... until a couple of weeks ago. My 12-gourd colony is full for the first time this year. I wanted to put up more housing this spring but didn't have the funds. As soon as the 3 eggs h...

Re: WE HAVE AN EGG!!!

Judy,

Looks like you are well on your way to graduate from wannabe to landlord. Your birds did seem to get right to the nest building. It should start here any day now. My first bird showed up Feb 25th, but most are still fighting over gourds and females.

Congratulations! and good luck,

Re: WE HAVE AN EGG!!!

Great news Judy! So about how long after they started staying overnight was it before the first egg?

The birds here haven't shown much interest in nest building yet. I just cant wait !!!

Good luck!

Derrick,

Got a hand it to all the landlords and hope-to-be landlords way up North! You've gotta be real dedicated to do all you guys have to do to keep a colony going. Thanks for doing it!

Re: Which Martin house sparrow trap?

I've used the universal trap with round holes on an aluminum house with crescent holes. It makes the entrance smaller, but sparrows can still get through.

Re: Chalk one up for the decoy

Yesterday I walked past my window and saw the local Coopers hawk on the ground about 40 feet from the gourd rack :x . It had captured a bird. Although I guess it could have been a starling or a cowbird, both of which are frequent visitors, as the hawk flew-off with its victim, the two black wings ha...

Chalk one up for the decoy

This morning I had a Coopers hawk hit one of my dove decoys that I place around the perimeter of my site. It hit the decoy, and then when the decoy wouldn't detach from the branch, it came back and hit it again. As if in disbelief, it then perched next to the decoy and looked very closely at it, as ...

Re: Trying to get a new Martin colony

Judy, Don't beat yourself up about not having a decoy on the house. It may or may not have helped, no way to tell, so no sense in letting it upset you (I've been there). I think having birds spend the night is a great sign. With all that you are doing, I'm very confident that you will have some bird...

Re: Sys are Here

James,

I see two SY females at my place today. The forum only accepts SY male reports, so I will have to wait until the males catch-up to the females. Isn't that always the case?!!! :P

Best of luck,
