Re: Question re decoys and Hawks

Ron, I have had a Coopers hawk patrolling the area for the last three years. I usually only see it once a day, but I'm sure it must make several attack attempts per day. I saw it twice today already! It flies through quickly and comes and goes very fast most of the time. In other cases, it will fly ...

Re: Purple Martin Tsunami Warning

Thanks for the update, Steve. My story is the same, lots of new martins came in over the past two days, just at a much smaller scale than at your place. Glad to hear the torrential rain was no big problem for you.

All the best,

Re: Unexpected departure of Martins

Yes, good to hear that many are still around. As mentioned by the forum admin, I would think it would be very unusual to have so many birds just gone in such a short time, especially since you have predator guards on both poles. Maybe they took a long weekend vacation at the nearest lake to dine on ...

Re: starting to get worried in central Texas

Apundt, I only had 14 birds last year. Up until two days ago I only had 1-2 birds hanging around. Now there are about 10. I'm sure that many of your birds will return since you had so many pairs last year. Although I'm sure you must be very frustrated, this must just be some type of fluke event. May...

Re: Sparrows in my house! Help!

Martin Man, Welcome! I bought a universal trap from the PMCA store many year ago (https://www.purplemartin.org/shop/product/ust/universal-sparrow-trap/). It fits nicely in a 6x6x6" compartment with rounds holes. You will need to check and verify that it will fit in the house that you have (I'm not f...

Re: Tree Swallow Emergency-Revisiting the Drew Protocol

Another great example of how the PMCA and this forum have been an outstanding resource, a superlative educational site and an overwhelming success over the years. I can remember back in 1997 when I first discovered the forum. Of course, the next year I immediately modified my old trio with 6x6" cavi...

Re: Trying to get a new Martin colony

Judy, Great post! I agree with everything the experts have to say about starting a new colony. I am fortunate to live in a martin paradise here in central TX, so that I can attract birds even with 4 large trees ~ 40 feet away and water at least 1/4 mile away. I tried for about 5 years during a horre...

Hey Anthony, don't panic yet. More will come. This should be a great weekend for us here in central TX. Keep us posted on your progress.

Re: Mine are LATE, 2 flew by, 1 (New?) Scout

Had a ASY male sitting on gourd rack this morning. I've now seen 3 birds on the gourd rack in last 2 days. Looks like they are starting to filter in. Anthony, are more of your birds back now? I was just now able to post a scout report. I had similar issues like you did. Winds are turning to from the...

Re: Mine are LATE, 2 flew by, 1 (New?) Scout

Two birds showed-up this morning, male and female. Female went to gourd #3 the first time she landed, same gourd as my founding female from 2 years ago. I'll bet that's her, already got a boyfriend, getting ready!!! They're about 1 month earlier this year. Probably been here for a few days, I can't ...

Re: Mine are LATE, 2 flew by, 1 (New?) Scout

Howdy Folks! No action here yet, but last year I had mostly 1-2 year-old birds. My first 2-yr old female scout showed last year on March 22nd. I'm trying to be patient but that ain't working too good. I put tunnels on 4 super gourds and added owl guards to all 12 gourds over the winter. Pine straw s...

Re: Decoys

The decoys I put out last year had the same problem. The plastic clip that attaches the decoy to the 3/8" perch rod just didn't fit tight when the screw was tightened. I was using them on perches attached the gourd mounting sleeve that lowers when the gourds are lowered, so I was able to wrap some t...

Re: Attraction Methods

If you are not already using them, you may want to use tunnels. I think that helped me attract my first pair. Main thing is to keep trying, eventually it will happen! Good luck, BW Thanks for these pointers...I'm not giving up...I have everything I need now to rig up the IPod to play at the times I...

Re: Gourds or houses?

Stingray, I like gourds, but have also used houses in the past. Right now I only have gourds with Troyer tunnels and Conley II entrances. There are pros and cons for both systems, but overall I think the gourds help alleviate one pair of Martins claiming two sites (although last year a pair did domi...

I like the Troyer vertical gourds. I also use Super gourds, and am planning to add Troyer tunnels to them for next year. Both are good products. I have never used the Troyer horizontals.

Good Luck!
