I've still got about a dozen coming by every other day or so, I think they may be on vacation, just window shopping. And, I am an expert procrastinator, so I agree with all of you! I'll keep 'em up until there is a chill in the air.

I think one good rainy spring was what helped me collect a few nesters the next year. I'm down with David W and bet you have a next year full of nesters yourself.

Good luck!

Another pole! You keep on truckin' David W. I think I'll try to add another pole as well over the winter. All fledges are gone here. I still get visitors throughout the day, mostly in the morning. I counted 17 the other day, lots of SY males. Some of the male parents come by as well, but most are vi...

They may have been looking for sites for next year, or may have just been visiting. No way to know for sure, but it could be a good sign. It sounds like you have done lots of reading. There is lots of good material on this site. You may just need to keep trying. It can take several years and lots of...

This should be OK. Ideally you want the new gourd to be identical to the old gourd, as much as possible. The new nesting material will help rid the nest of mites and the vents will help with the heat and humidity. You also may want to think about providing shade. One of Louise's recent posts address...

Many folks on forum do this. You did the right thing by putting the runt in the nest with young as close in size to the runt as possible. I had one this year that recovered very well and fledged along with the new family.

Good luck,

David,

Congratulations on the increase in nesting pairs. The rain and cold really made things difficult for many landlords this year. Keep a close eye on those last birds and get them flying.

Thanks for the update and Good Luck!

I had some trouble putting together my 2' extension for the 2" square aluminum pole, but not as much as you did. It eventually went together after a few good whacks. I might suggest if you do this again you could heat the end of the pole using two hair dryers, one placed on either side to try to hea...

Great job Craig! We are so lucky here in the south where martins and insects are so plentiful. Sure does get quiet though when they leave for the year.

Its hard to keep a good Martin down! My thoughts are that they will most often do what you observed - hesitate at first but quickly get over the differences and get back to taking care of business. Ideally though, it would probably be best if the replacement gourd was as identical as possible to the...

I agree completely with John regarding the SY males roaming around and hanging out at different sights. Lots of those this year at my single 12-gourd rack. I think it was good this year to have 4-5 empty gourds for the SY males to fight over with themselves and the HOSP, for to keep them from bother...
