Alex, Great question. I've been wondering the same thing - how to tell the recent fledges from the rest of "the crowd?" Yesterday I noticed from watching numerous flying birds that some look like SY females but lack distinctive points at the two corners of their tail, thus making their tail look som...

Anthony,

Just had the same thing happen...young scissortail with tail about half as long as adults playing chase with one of the young martins on the guard rack - funny. They are real good flyers.

Thank you, Steve, I have been using the small quantities of 5% sevin this year. It has worked well for most gourds in my 12-gourd colony, but there is one gourd that has a significant mite infestation, so I have also been using a pyrethrin / permethrin product on the outside of the gourd only. It se...

That's a nice shelf. I've been trying to get them to build nests in similar structures but haven't had any luck. They finally have built one nest this year. Of course they chose not to use any of the shelves I put up. One thing for sure, we've had plenty of mud for nest building! They are great bird...

Steve,

Great article, thanks for sharing it. With such a large colony, I'm curious about the method you use to control parasites.

Thanks,

There was another report this spring about martins nesting in a brick wall where some bricks were missing. They are amazing birds.

Congratulations! Keep an eye out for mites and black flies, and before you know it, your baby birds will be flying. I think it (only) takes about 26 days for them to fledge after they hatch. They will grow faster than you can imagine!

Toy, I was wondering the same thing. I filled-up my car at the Shell station next door this evening around 7pm. I saw several martins flying around one of the lamps and two more flying around another one. I walked over to the nearest one and saw some nesting materials up underneath the lamp. One bir...

Martins Nesting In Street Lights

I ran across several martins nesting in some parking lot streetlights. Never seen this before. Matt@atx, perhaps you could help me out by verifying this. There are about five of these street lights surrounding the Sonic Drive-In at 1626 and 967. If you have a chance to check it out, please let me kn...

Joe, I've seen an influx of new birds too, mostly SY males but a few ASY birds. My small colony (7 of 12 gourds occupied) still has room for more pair. Hopefully that will keep the SY males from causing problems for the newborns. Haven't lost any to the rain, knock on wood! Its been warm here and th...

I'm no BB expert, but I know that after martins lay eggs they will tolerate lots of changes to their house/gourd. I'd say go ahead and put it on. You definitely don't want a sparrow to come along and break those eggs.

Good luck,
