Kent, so nice to hear from you again. Please post your comments more often. For those of you that are fairly new to the forum, Kent was the founder of this "Purple Martin Forum". Then finding it a bit too much to handle with his personal life, he decided to turn the forum over to the PMCA. I'm very ...

Thanks for the update John, I suspect many of these birds are heading north to Alberta and western Canada  They are due here in about 4 to 6 weeks.

I agree with Thurman, SREH are very attractive to the females especially. I start new colonies up here in Alberta using total SREH all the time. Round holes are a thing of the past with me. Large established colonies tend to have less Starling problems because the ASY male Martins will drive them of...

Sounds great Kelly, I am now making my prebuilt nests using a Styrofoam subfloor 1/2" thick, in the rear of the nest tray and then painting the styrofoam as well as the nest tray walls with mud. Then ad a handful of straw. The styrofoam worked really well last year. Give it a try.

Thanks for the post Kelly. Really makes me home sick for my Martins. By the way, have you got your North Star house that you won at last years Martin Fest up and ready?

IMHO any SREH should be backed up with a repeating Starling trap of some kind. Your SREH will then become Starling proof!

Meal worms will survive in the fridge for at least 2 or 3 months. It is best to remove them every 10 days or so, warm them a bit and feed them a carrot or potato then place them back in the fridge. I have kept mine all winter at the back of my shop, it's 50 degrees F. they still feed a bit at that t...

Good Luck this year Jack, I have the same hawk and Merlin problems up here in Alberta. They can do alot of damage. Hopefully you can make some adjustments to your colony site and they will leave. There are things that can be done to discourage them.

Good advice Bob, I like the meal worms myself, as they can be kept in my beer fridge for many months. Meal worms are easily controlled with temperature. You can even grow them yourself if you want. The Martins love them. Check out Google on meal worms you will get lots of info.

Hi AJ, I had my best year ever at both my colonies. Can't remember the exact numbers but I had 42 pair here and 31 at the Golf course. Fledged well over 300 nestlings. Plus I look after several other smaller colonies that are coming along well. Sounds like you will be in for some good numbers this s...

Hi AJ, are you the Annne that I have conversed with last year? I think so. You are right AJ, I think all of our birds are still well south enjoying the mild weather. Our Western Canadian Martins probably migrate North with the Martins that nest in the Northern States . So they won't suffer, from thi...

Steven, don't forget to keep a good supply of Oyster or egg Shell on that feeder all season long. The Martins will find it.

Thanks Jeff, Good Luck with your styro foam houses. The Martins should love them. I know they will love the design as my NOrth Stars work wonderfully and I'm getting 100% occupancy.

Steven, I feed my Martins on a platform feeder much like what you describe. I don't have Blue Birds in my yard but I do have Robins. I have had to build a Robin Proof feeder to keep them from stealing all the meal worms. But I have seen the Adult Martins chase the Much larger Robins away from the me...

From my experience the brand doesn't mean that much but you get what you pay for. Go to a good gun shop and let them advise you. Conrad makes some very good points, Gamo is an excellent Gun.

Mike, this is why it is so important to get the birds at your colony use to a feeding platform in ones yard. When my older birds return early in the spring, they roost in the houses and go directly to the Oysterbar for food in cold snowy weather. They remember well from previous years. Most all of u...

EH...... this post is getting me excited already. Thanks Louise and Linda. You two Ladies are the best! Many passive landlords just don't know what their missing, the more we check on them the more success you will have and the tamer they get. My Martins just love it when I lower my Oyster Bar and f...
