Re: Louisiana-maybe a first pair

That's great David, I had been wondering as well. Take care of them and your set, I love to hear a success story.

Re: Dealing with neighbors while trapping sparrows

Don't feel guilty about trapping the sparrows. Your neighbors perception of sparrows is no more important than yours. Having a feud with your neighbor would make things very uncomfortable, so hopefully she will be an adult and you can agree to disagree and move on.

That's great, sit back and enjoy. I hope you have a successful nesting season and then you can worry about them coming back next year. :) There is always something to wonder about.

Re: Hello

I don't know what the Martins home range might be. Someone more knowledgable than me will have to answer to that, but 5 miles doesn't seem that far for them.

Re: Hello

I don't think those ASY ( after second year) birds are just passing through. I think of passing through as spending the night and then moving on, weather permitting. Did the Martins land on your gutter all season long? If so I would say there has to be a colony near you. Sorry, I can't help with the...

Re: Hello

Great set up Rob. You are lucky to have Martin action so quick. My take on the dawn song is to play it until it is apparent they are going to stay or you can see they are uncomfortable with it or turn it off when they're there and back on when they leave. It looks like they might stay, but if they d...

Re: Opinions on my setup

Sounds promising, going into the gourd late evening leads me to believe it is looking for a home not just passing by. I would think of the chatter as keeping them company after they show up, maybe as they get more comfortable they won't need it as much??? Keep tinkering with them, you'll figure them...

Re: Opinions on my setup

Wow, that's great. Your housing situation is similar to what happened to me. I got a Trio Castle from my Mom when she passed away, but the Martins payed no attention to it and went for the gourds. As my colony grows I think it will force them into the Trio Castle. As you are able to watch them more ...

Re: SREHs do appear to work

Great camara shot. Others have mentioned them being breached from time to time.I like the SREHs to keep the starlings at bay until I can trap or shoot them. It might be a good idea to try and eliminate them before Martins come.

Re: Opinions on my setup

Looks good with a very open setup, yet a good distance from your house. I would think your chances are good since Martins are the best attractant for Martins. If it were me, I would leave your poles as they are and let the Martins decide which they like best. After you have some nest for a year move...

Re: Dawn song questions

I would play the dawn song as much of the day as you can. Some put it on the housing, I played mine close to the housing. If it's drawing them in to have a look it's doing it's job. It could be birds that already have a site and just coming in to see what's going on. Keep playing it until you finall...

Re: Martin Nests not very good quality

I like to pre-nest with pine needles because it makes me feel better and gives them a little warmth for the cold nights when they first return. I think for the most part they would be just fine without any help. Some pairs will bring a lot of additional nesting material and some very little. I don't...

Ed, I'm not aware of anyone banding in my area. Is there anyway to see all the locations that banding is taking place?

Excellent, are they going in out of your housing or just flyovers? It only takes a couple to like what they see.

Good news Buckdog! It was most likely a female, the scout map is not showing any sy birds that far North yet. Keep us posted, I would love to hear that she brought a mate back with her.
