Tony,

Brooks is a small unincorporated area near Oxford in SE Adams County-dairy farms, many small lakes, deer, turkeys, pine trees, two small churches and a tavern. What else do you need?

Several years ago I had an SY pair investigate a peterson style blue bird house on a 4' post that was about 40 feet from the martin set up. They spent the better part of a day going in and out before they finally chose a gourd to nest in.

SY's in Wisconsin/ Minnesota?

I have yet to see any SY birds this year. They are late by about 8 days from previous years. ASYs have been here in good numbers for a couple weeks. The map also fails to indicate any in either Wisconsin or Minnesota. Weather has not been any worse than normal with warm days and some cool nights so I...

Sorry, I confused the two traps. I should have said that I do not use any bait in the Sparrow door traps. The ST-1 must be the three compartment trap. I apologize for my error. I agree with Patrick's reply.

I have never used bait in the ST-1 traps. I have found that the smaller hole seemed to attract sparrows as they investigated the martin houses. I usually am able to keep my set up sparrow free by using the ST-1 in addition to the three compartment sparrow trap with the center holding compartment ( I...

I suggest that you purchase a super gourd trap. I have had one for a couple years and I am very happy with the results. It fits a round hole super gourd so I use one of those just for the trap. My other gourds are all crescents. I also use the sparrow door trap on the house as well as a homemade s&s...

I used to raise canaries and used cedar shavings exclusively in all of my breeding cages and flight cages with no detrimental effects of any kind. Young birds are especially sensitive to their environment and I did not experience any mortality. I used cedar shavings in my martin housing originally b...

Pine needles is all that I use in my houses and gourds. They drain nicely when it rains and the martins will go out and collect more so they obviously like them.

Thanks. I just searched for excluder and got my answer. The new Excluder gourds are too new for much feed back but they look like they are a good choice for me. I will give them a try.

Super Gourd vs, Excluder Gourds

Just a quick question. I am adding some plastic gourds this year. I have 4 Super Gourds with round holes and I am going to crescent, excluder or modified excluder SREHs. The price is the same through the PMCA but with the excluder brand, I get porches included. With the Super Gourds , I need to purc...

I did some research on the ultrasonic devices some time ago out of curiousity. I used to be licensed in pest control when I worked for the state government and my background is in biology. I was unable to document any objective studies that indicate that these devices are effective for insects or ma...

I suggest waiting a couple weeks to move the house. You mentioned that the birds could follow the house. If that means that the house is currently occupied, there is a substantial risk that any young would be abandoned by their parents. In Illinois, the martins should be gone by mid to late August a...

To destroy old nests or not?

There are parasites that target birds and mammals, and there are parasites that target those parasites. It is a never ending story in nature. I have always discarded old nests in an out of the way place rather than destroying them. The rationale being that the infested nesting material also containe...

I am in South central Wisconsin near Oxford. I had a new ASY male and female show up this weekend and stay as well as another SY male. I figure that the ASY pair had a nest failure somewhere. The way that they were exploring empty cavities, it looks like they could try to nest, although it is gettin...
