Re: Up to 5 pairs now.. video

Great video! That was a gorgeous shot of them all cupping in to land on the rack. I wonder if the Chirpy Nest maker has ever considered making a multi-compartment Chirpy Nest house? Using the same great features of the current, individual units, and incorporating those into a large, multi-compartme...

Up to 5 pairs now.. video

The Chirpy Nests are occupied now. The martins seem to love them (especially me).

But the house and gourds are still loved by martins lol

Re: Banded SY Pair

I have two banded SY martins that have apparently paired up and for the past two days have been trying to fight their way into a vacant cavity that has been dominated by an adult pair. I have been watching this pair of SY's very close the past couple of days. The auxiliary band number of the SY mal...

I've used glue traps as a last option. I just cut a hole in a plastic lid from a cottage cheese container or something similar and make it small enough so martins cant get in. I put it on and still watch it until I catch the HOSP.
Excellent tip

Hello All
We just put my new T14 Poly house up. Boy it is still nippy cold here. And that wind added to it. Later
Poly house? Is it pretty light-weight?

I just sprinkle the powder Seven under the front of each nest a day or two before eggs are due to hatch. This has always lasted long enough to keep the mites away until they fledge.

Great idea. I’m doing the same this year. I had a terrible mite problem last year. Never again.

Re: Convert regular housing to gourd rack...

I added two Chirpy Nests a couple of weeks ago.. a pair has taken residence in one already. My pole has a SK house... SK gourds and 2 Chirpy boxes. They have a great selection. The Chirpy box is a superb design.. well made, and easy to hang. The removable nest trays are icing on the cake. I’m going ...

Re: Ordered some new style PM housing

I’m sure they’ll be occupied. Keep us updated. Lol... occupied tonight. Saw a male ASY land on porch and scoot in. Its got a nice layer of pine straw, so he’ll enjoy it :) I have a pair in a house compartment, and a male in a gourd.. and then the male that’s in the chirpy nest. There may be a femal...

Re: Keeping Sparrows Out of Martin Nests

Another thing about glue traps.. agter the martins are gone, HS will continue to nest long after until later summer. Glue trap use then is even safer. No martins will be around at all and you can continue to rid them. My other method is a scoped air rifle. It is by far the most enjoyable of the two....

Re: Ordered some new style PM housing

Not yet :( But i have two pair which must be from last year because they went straight to compartments used last year. Unless it’s just something with the particular house compartment that’s very appealing to martins. But .. yesterday I did notice some or them peaking inside the new style and perchi...

Lots of activity.. squawkin and hollerin

As the terrible freeze experience gets farther behind us, activity has picked up sharply around my house. I’ve seen many martins in the sky- a beautiful sight. I’ve got 4 to 6 martins continuously visiting and a pair confirmed in a compartment. Maybe more. These little guys don’t let anything get in...

You had too many pairs for all of them to not come back due to a snake. Id expect a few to reappear soon

Re: Keeping Sparrows Out of Martin Nests

Yep Pam will work. I’ve used glue traps a lot. Ive waited for the HS to build a nest and lay eggs. It’s never failed and have yet to have a martin to try to go inside an occupied (nest stuffed) HS cavity. But I guess it’s not impossible. Being able to make the hole smaller once the nest is HS occupi...

Re: Gourds vs House

Have extremely aggressive English Sparrows in my neighborhood. Are gourds better choice than a 12 hole house? HS will go to both. Nothing stops them; If they can enter, they’ll figure out a way to nest in it. I have a house and gourds.. they’ve tried to nest in both. One pair was successful with a ...

Re: Ordered some new style PM housing

I was able to get these Chirpy PM boxes hung. I’m starting with two. They are far better than I thought. I’ve only got a couple of martins here now. More will be arriving so I’m very curious to see how PM react to this style.

Re: A couple of cheerful videos

I remember you from last season. Housing looks great how many pair did you have last year? I had four pairs and a couple of extremely pesky SY males. I had quite a few chicks but not a lot of fledges due to mites. Gonna male sure it doesn’t happen Gain by doing better nest changes and maybe a littl...

Re: Keeping Sparrows Out of Martin Nests

Almost never use a glue trap. A martin will indeed sometimes enter a house sparrow nest. In large excluder gourds, I've even had them nest in the small space available after a house sparrow had nearly clogged the interior. Once when starting to clean out a house sparrow nest from such a gourd, with...
