I have found dead “ratbirds” inside my NBT but I have never witnessed an escape. There is one now in the holding cage and has been there seven days now. I kept It fed and water. I’ve watched it disappear up the pipe for a minute or so. The “ratbird is still there waiting for a partner to give my bud...

T, I hastily hoisted up a my barely finished homemade aluminum housing late Saturday evening just to see what this thing I made look like up in the middle of 1999 season. Sunday (the following day) morning I was up before the sun was, brewed some coffee, went outside to admire my creation. I was not...

Folks, With in the five mile radius of my site, I know of three sites that if you look at their locations when PMs are not around, any seasoned landlord would say “NO WAY” that site will ever get PMs. The first time I saw them up (before PMs gets here) I made the same conclusion. In The middle of th...

James, I usually have two places for them in my trash can for most of the time. I used to get too excited (not saying that you do) and pop one of them while both or three of them are perched. If only one shows up, I would watch it through my scope, if it starts to sing to bring in its mate, then I w...

I made mine to drop 3 inches. I calibrated it with three coins (quarters). The first coin dropped the chamber one inch, the second another inch and the third one dropped the chamber all the way down. I also made the exit hole three inch diameter. I don’t remember all of the measurements of the movin...

Karen, The little “ratbirds” actually like my setup. Specially with six sparrows in a 36x36x24 cage in between the NBT and the fence calling in all of their little buddies. Last year this set up of NBT, two PMCA baited repeating traps and my Pellet rifle harvested about 120 “ratbirds”, mostly the li...

Penny, The first year it was up the sub-adults took on to it. Caught a couple then I had to place a bar across the bottom of the opening so only sparrows could get in. I had to do the same thing the following season. After that I lowered this set up a foot. This took care of PMs wanting to nest in i...

I built mine out of pre painted aluminum (flat gutter stock material). It has been deployed fro three or four years now. The on mistake I made was not having an easy access to cleaning the inside. Once a year I have to drill out the rivets to remove the roof in order to access the remove paper wasp ...

Here is another trap from Australia that will work well on starlings. I like the way they work this trap. This can be built esealy but not deployed near your PM site. I like the use of cat food, dry dog food, jelly donut and French fries for bait. http://www.mynamagnet.com.au/trap.asp http://icwdm.o...

Penny, Here are two plans to catch all of the starlings you want. I think with a Little carpentry/plumbing these can be built. Personally I would use a one inch diameter PVC pipes to frame this assembly. As you know all it takes is one starling/sparrow to breech a PM nest and it’s all over. This sea...

Dick, Yesterday evening I saw about eight PMs flying over my site. Right before dusk they all disappeared in to their chosen rooms. With all of the rain, thunder, lightning and wind we’ve got, I can only imagine what is like inside those rooms their in. My dog Scooter hates thunder and lightning so ...

Since the Purple Martins arrived at my backyard, I quit feeding birds for I noticed the frequent visit of a pair of hawks. Since then the Purple Martins have behaved differently from the past seasons. They tend to be airborne for most of the time instead perched, the fly around my site and when they...

Folks, I found that the wires (at Lowe’s) used in hanging false ceilings with would be strong and durable for outdoor use (galvanized). They come in two sizes and is soft enough to work with. I think this will be a lot cheaper than the electrical wires. I use this material to hang my humming bird fe...

Dick, I think that the entrance should be as small as it can be for starlings to fit and the exit hole should be as large as your design allows it to be. I made mine 3 inches in diameter. I sprinkled cut up (inch long) pine needles on the landing, then spray painted it on to the landing of the chamb...

Dick, I saw three Purple martins at my site on 2-2-07. They were there for a few days and then they were gone as soon as it got colder. When the outside temperature got warmer, one came back and have been at my site for a couple of weeks now. As of yesterday (2-27-07), I saw six Purple Martins spent...
