“Spill proof” works better than I expected. Hardly any bird seed hits the ground. This feeder is three times more efficient than that of the previous one. I made this feeder out of a Margarita Mix plastic bottle, a Progresso Soup Cup, a 12 inch plastic Flower Pot Base and chicken wire. I enjoyed fee...

birdy girl, I’ve had quite a bit of success dealing with sparrows and starlings. I live in a subdivision. Close to my residence is about half a dozen of fast food places. A grocery store with oaks trees in their parking lot. It’s a breeding ground for my trouble. Last year not one purple martin egg ...

I stopped all three bird seed feeders the weekend before last. The result is just awesome. I only saw two to six birds that came to feed under the sparrow cage at a time. With three feeders going aside form what is in the sparrow cage, I would see twenty to thirty birds on the ground feeding. This a...

The raptors are more likely to succeed taking a PM if they’re around. I know and seen the prey chasing and bouncing on the raptor in flight. This is the first year I’ve had feeders in my backyard since I started providing housing for the Purple Martins. This is also the first year that raptors are h...

Spill proof? This will minimize the doves that come to feed under my sparrow cage. The sparrows spill at least a fourth of the seeds from the feeder inside the cage. All I have to (I think) is place a pan the size of the bottom of the cage and recycle the bird seeds. I placed those feeders under the...

Bird Feeders and Purple Martins

After 2006 PM season, I had to find something to entertain myself on my low times. My two Jack Russell Terriers, my ukulele can only go so far and I needed something else to do. I realized I was having PM withdrawal, so I started to make bird feeders and start experimenting on how to make them more ...

BamaBren, I used to live in the out skirts of town but now I’m in the middle of town. Fast food places and grocery stores are within a rock throw from my home. I will continue to keep live sparrows in my 36x36x24 cage for it attracts sparrows to it instead of the PM housing. There is where two repea...

Folks,
I’m keeping 4 to 6 House Sparrows in my 36x36x24 cage with a PMCA Repeating Baited trap.

The trap is still producing 2 to 4 House Sparrows every two weeks.

John Iosca, If you can't stand shooting HOSP after you've caught it, try putting it in a zip lock bag then trow it in the trash. This way you don't have to watch. John OK, After catching over 100 sparrows last year, did this help this year? Did you see less/more sparrows this year? I've done the sam...

A little over twenty starling have taken to the trap but most of then have gone by the pellet way. I built a 36x36x24 cage out of .5x.5...

Rolo, This year I got serious about trapping sparrows. My next door neighbor is leaving dry dog food out for their two dogs. This in turn attracted grackles, sparrows and starlings to my place. Before they did this I was happy with my home made tipping can trap. This trap only works early in the sea...

Yesterday I had a chance to sit and watch 10 to 12 sparrows in action. They hang around the Arizona Ash that is in my back door nei...

Folks, You really have to get rid of sparrows and starlings all you can. I use white bread to lure sparrows and starlings to ground from the trees near by. I place a slice of bread in a folded half inch wire mesh and throw three to four where I can get a clean safe shot. Shoot and Trap sparrows and ...

Nanette, I place my PMCA baited traps outside my patio by the drive way on the floor and caught plenty of sparrows there. Then is just sopped so I move them close to my home made feeders. The trick is not to put too much bird seeds in the feeders the it will run out of bird seeds by mid day. Then al...
