Re: All my martins are dying. Any advice?

I would go to a pet store and buy some crickets. I have only had to supplemental feed twice in my years with martins but the first time I did it I used crickets and it only took about 5-10 flips before one PM took off after a cricket. Once the first one took a few crickets the rest caught on really ...

Re: Wrens and gourds

Be careful with them. I have had more BB's and TS losses due to wrens than any other birds. In my area they nest a little later but it's not uncommon for me to find a nest of dead BB's with twigs on top of them. Usually the second brood of BB's or some of the late nesting TS.

Re: Put up a Martin House for Looks... it's covered in Birds! Now What?

Congrats. This part of the country is littered with starlings. I am north of you in Indiana but I guess you have them too. If I were in your positions I would get some starling resistant entrances (SREH) and put over the round holes. I have never been around that particular house but I assume they o...

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

You need to be vigilant but in my experience the fight gets easier. Early in the spring the sparrows are really fighting for housing. I still get some from time to time as the summer goes on I see less and less of them on my housing. You really need to watch them once your martins have laid eggs, th...

Re: Martins

It's not uncommon to double number of pair the first few year. I am not sure how many cavities you have or how many you plan to have in the future but if you have 6 pair this year I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with 15 pair or so next year, so be ready. It's a good problem to have. I don't th...

If you don't have mites it must be the heat I assume? What kind of housing do you have, any ventilation?

Congratulations, sounds like you are on your way. I am betting having the ASY's around you will also attract some SY pair's as well. I wont be surprised if you end up with a few more pair before its all said and done.

I'm in Indiana too and we are due to have a big emergence of them. I haven't seen or heard any yet but I saw pics on the local news today of some showing up in southern Indiana, near Bloomington. I am guessing with the higher then average temps coming this week they will start popping out of the gro...

If they are bringing in nesting material then you are well on your way. Keep up with controlling HOSP and let the PM's do their thing. Congrats.

At that age I would have done what you did. Put them back in their nest and check them tomorrow. If they die I would remove them as soon as possible.

Re: Martins and TS living together?

The only time I have experience TS running PM's off are at a new colony with "investigating" martins. Once you have returning ASY's I have never experience TS causing them to leave. We have a very heavy TS population in my area and I had documented years ago at my old colony two pair of TS nesting n...

Re: Sevin 5% dust treatments

Not able to picture in my head how much 1/2 an ounce of Seven is but it seem like quite a bit. I have always waited until the martin eggs are due to hatch. I then lift the front edge of the nest and put a small amount under there. This has always worked for me and kept from having any mite problems....

I would go to youtube and just listen to some videos. The only way I distinguish the male from female vocalization is the clicking at the end. I am sure there are other differences but I have never paid that much attention.

Re: Predator attacks martin decoy on roof perch

Martins are going to perch on top of the housing somehow or another. So you might as well provide them a perch, as they do enjoy them. The good news is your decoy is doing it's job. I would keep putting it up, it is possible the predator will attack it a few times and then move on to hunt a differen...

Re: Roosting

It is hard to say for sure what they are doing/thinking. I can tell you it is not uncommon for new martins at a new site to take some time to actually spend the night. I think after a few more days you will know if they are actually interested in your site or are just stopping by looking for other m...

Re: SYs and Pairing Up

Over the next few days you will likely notice them spending more time at one particular cavity. In the beginning they can be all over the place. I have had SY's bring in one piece of corn fodder from a field and lay eggs with no other nesting material. SY nests are usually not much to brag about. Ho...

Re: Big turn out so far

This is great to hear! Here is hoping that you will be fledging over a hundred then! 8) Yeah, barring some disaster it will be well over 100. Last year I fledged under 200. I just need to get a morning free where I can keep an eye out for SY's. There are only a few reports in Indiana but I saw some...

Big turn out so far

I lowered my housing today and checked all cavities for the first time this season. Last year I had 44 pair and this year I have 43 nests and I haven't even seen any SY's yet. I am glad I decided to add another gourd rack this year. This year I have a total of 68 cavities, 40 gourds and 2 T 14's. I ...

In my experience the SY's will start nest quicker then ASY's. However it could still be several weeks after they arrived. I would say after another week or two you will see some nesting material comIsn't in.
