Re: Migrating Martins

Archer
Let us know when your martins arrive, I’m just across the way to the west of you, so I can have my house ready. I’ve been keeping my eyes to the sky last couple days watching for them but it’s still gets cool at night so it might be a week or so yet.

Re: First SY-M today

Oh my apology I thought you lived in South Dakota, now it makes sense. I’m still waiting for that scout to arrive we have had a very nice spring so far but they usually don’t arrive here until the end of April.

Re: First SY-M today

Robert you stated that your adults have been at your place since mid February which means they have been in South Dakota for 2 months already are they nesting now?

Re: New houses

Are there martins in your area? I would take the tape off of one or two holes, and leave the rest on till you get a visitor or a resident and then remove the rest after that.

Re: Banded purple martins

Last year I put my house up around the 20 of April a week before the martins came and I had sparrows building nests immediately I took the house down and removed the nests and then the martins came and they had a few spats but the martins prevailed and eventually filled up the house, that’s why I’m ...

Re: Banded purple martins

Archer yes iam aware of the scout report and have been watching it on a daily basis, but they seem to be a few days away from here, I was curious as to know when yours came so I can put my house up before they come, as to detour the sparrows and starlings from creating havoc with the martins. My fir...

Re: Banded purple martins

Very interesting, I will keep my Binos clean and ready. What color are the bands on them? I guess it’s safe to say that if none were ever banded in Canada then they probably won’t return, seeing that they usually return back to where they were hatched.

Banded purple martins

Hi I’m not sure how many purple martins get banded every year but I do know that they do band them. Has any one seen any banded martins this spring?

Re: First Arrival West Des Moines, IA

Billie thanks for letting me know! Last year was my first attempt at attracting PM, I built a house with 12 rooms and had 12 pairs with a mix of adults and sub adults. I didn’t realize what a treat they are to watch over the coarse of there nesting period here in North America. I’m anticipating more...

Re: First Arrival West Des Moines, IA

Happy Birthday hope you have a great day watching the martins! I’m getting ready for the day when some arrive also, but I will have to wait a couple weeks before that happens due to that we are almost the last areas in the north for them to get here. I’m watching the scout arrival map but they aren’...

Re: Pole w/ Winch for T-14

Hi there! is that carrier made out of a 2x6 or a 2x8?
And how did you attach your cable to the carrier? I am in the process of making a t14 right now and was going to make the carrier like chucks t 14 but I think this is a better way, a little heavier but more solid.

Re: When is it going to warm up

Here in Saskatchewan where I live it was the coldest February since 1917, today the temp is -25 Celsius with a wind chill of -35. The long range forecast is saying we are going to have a gradual warmup starting tommorow and by the middle of March above freezing temps. This is not normal and I think ...

Re: Banding Return Question

Hi I have a question about banding the martins. I believe you have to have a qualified person to band the birds, so iam wondering who these people are? Do they have special training and a licence to do this? I live in south western Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦 who do I have to get a hold of to do this in ...
