Re: Purple Martin house placement

Thanks every one for your input and, sharing your experience with a newbie like me. I realize that every year is different then the last, but I feel these amazing birds need as much help as they can get so I am going to put up another house next spring.

Cheers

Re: Purple Martin house placement

I would have put it at least 20 feet apart but if they are that close and the martins don’t mind there, then it should work any where thanks guys for the info.

Re: Sparrow nest tearout how often?

I was watching my martins and it never fails as soon as they leave the house the dam sparrows fly in and start snooping around going through all the cavities, then when the martins come back the sparrows fly away. I’m wondering do the sparrows go in to the cavavties to wreck the Martin eggs or does ...

Re: T 14 house question

Well now that I think of that it does make sense, it is a older wooden house with 6x6 rooms and there is no ventilation system to get air flow through the rooms. I am going to put those 2 inch round vents in my T-14 house

Re: T 14 house question

My neighbor has a PM house and every year he has 1 or 2 that fall out of the house on the ground and they are not ready to fledge, so since this is my first year as a landlord I want to try and prevent any from falling by putting on some railings.

Re: T 14 house question

Thanks toy. I like those little vents that are on the sides of your house. Did your house come with these vents or did you install them?

Re: T 14 house question

Thanks for the reply guys. I thought it would be a safety issue that would help, I won’t really have time to do nest checks on a regular time schedule, due to the fact that I will be gone for a week at a time I was just wondering if any one had issues with this type of house with out railings. This ...

T 14 house question

Hellow every one I am thinking about building a T14 PM house. When I look at the design I noticed that on the porches there are no railings, in the event that a hatchling gets out of the entrance hole, and they fall on to the ground! So my question is do any of you that have one of these houses expe...

Re: Oops!!

Billie
Mortar is just a powder that you add water to, quickcrete which is what you should use has gravel and sand mixed with concrete powder which will have a better bond in the ground which will not break apart as easy.

Re: Waiting for new resident

Randy Thank you for taking the time to write this very informative article. It explains a lot of things that fill in the blanks of how this beautiful bird exists. As Iam typing this on my phone I am watching the martins around my fist time house that I built, it has 12 rooms, and for the last 2 morn...

Re: Waiting for new resident

LOL all those different letters can confuse a persons but I did look at some pictures to determine that they are purple martins and not tree swallows, I just don’t know the difference between a adult male that is 3 years old and a second year male do they look the same? And the same goes with the fe...

Re: Waiting for new resident

Randy Iam not that familiar with a SYM or a SYF, my neighbor has a house and his martins look much bigger then the ones that are looking my house over, so iam assuming that his martins are older adult birds, the males have a beak that appears to have more of a curve to it, anyway I seen one male go ...

Re: Waiting for new resident

Well yesterday I had at least 6 pairs land on my house for 10 seconds and then they disappeared, but today the activity is unbelievable! there are martins coming steady and checking it out, they appear to be 1 male and 1 female, the male checks out the nesting cavity while the female sits outside an...

Dale
Iam from Saskatchewan which is a province in Canada.
I just started to see the first Purple Martin a week ago and they all appear to be adult birds, are the young ones just a little immature and that is why they take longer to get here?
