If it's been hot & dry try spraying water with a garden hose over the top of the houses/gourds so it falls down on the houses/gourds. It helps too cool them down. I've done this when it gets real hot/humidy here & the babies are hanging out of the nest holes panting like crazy. Mites can also be ano...

If all of mine pair up I'll have 7 nesting pair total. 4 ASY pair & 3 Subbie pairs. Keep sending them nort...

Don: >Were your Crickets dead or alive< Alive. I had put them in the fridge so they'd sort of be alive, but not moving much. I placed them on the feeder around 7:30 PM, about an hour before dark & the time when the martins go into the nests for the night. From my second floor windows I could see dow...

Feeding Station

Since it's been so cold & rainy for several days I got some crickets & mealworms today. I was going to have my Huz lower the house & put them on the balcony & in the nests. My PM's are a bit nervous & take off if we walk down the side walk. SOOOO not wanting to stress them we came up with an idea of...

Cricket ??

I bought some crickets & mealworms today. They're in a styrofoam coffee cup with the lid taped shut. Can I put them in the frig so they get cold & slow down enough I can place them on the PM house without having them all jump away? I asked where I bought them, but the guy didn't know. I don't have a...

I haven't seen him since he flew off with the other pair. The sun has finally come out, so I'm sure they're over at the river feeding. I'm hoping he comes back later in the day so I can snap a few more pics of him. Once I realized it was a PM I thought he had something in his beak that was yellow, b...

ASY Male with YELLOW BEAK!

At first I thought I was seeing things. Cleaned my glasses & looked again. Thought naw it's a Starling. I stood & watched him & then realized it was a ASY Male & he had a yellow beak. It'ds not a bug or anything stuck to him either. I managed to get off 2 quick shots with my digital camera, but they...

Don: I'm almost smack in the middle of the state. The martins seem to be late this year compared to last year & also in fewer numbers, at least in the northeast. I do know that about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh there's an Amish farming community that usually has lots of martins. So hopefully some w...

Female Subbies in PA!!

Finally sighted 2 female subbies around 7 PM tonight. No sign of any males yet. They were checking out the house & sitting on the power lines right next to the ASY females. I also had an extra ASY male yesterday. No sign of him today tho. I currently have 4 nesting pair. Hope to end up with a few mo...

Have more martins & they're nesting!

Female #3 showed up this morning. Counted 5 males. All ASY's. No sign of any subbies yet. They were really going at it, picking on each other. Then the one female decided to attack the female sparrow (have a pair nesting in the house). As soon as they went at it 4 male martins joined in & chased her...

More central PA martins.....

......well I can add 3 more. Had another female & 2 males join in this morning. Seems a bit trivial compared to allot of the TX sized colonies, but hey us Northeners will take any we can get :).

docgipe: I'm a bit confused as to where you're talking about. We have no Rt 120 here, unless it was one of the 911 changes no body pays attention too, LOL. There is a Rt 150 off Rt 44. At the intersection a right turn brings you into Avis, left takes you to Jersey Shore. I'm assuming that's the one ...

Female spotted in central PA

Had a female spotted at 1:30 PM in the martin house today. It's been raining since Friday night & is in the mid 40's. Rain is to end around mid-night tonight. More rain on Monday & Tuesday. Then clearing & rising temps expected. I told the 2 males early this morning to go find a few ladies & geez di...

2nd ASY in central PA

Had a new visitor this morning :). Just at the crack of dawn a second ASY male showed up. I had gone out last night & told the other one that's been here to go find some friends & bring them back & he did. Hopefully once the storm/rain we're to get tomorrow passes more will show up. The 2 of them we...
