SY's hitting Alberta a bit early.

Hi folks, unlike you poor people in the North east our weather here in Alberta and western Canada has been very good. The weather has been and will be perfect for migration into western Canada for the next few days. The lows pressure systems are sucking the subbies in now. I had three SY males arriv...

Sorry for not seeing this post sooner. Yes the North Star house actually has excellent ventilation. All compartments have vent holes inside up the middle chamber and also at the back going into the adjacent compartments. As for the outside wall I only use one 3/8 inch vent hole here in Alberta, but ...

Patrick, you are so right. I also keep a complete arsenal of traps for House Sparrows. Just removing Sparrow nests does not work. When ever you remove a Sparrow nest from a compartment you should place an insert compartment trap in the compartment with part of the nest and eggs if there are any. It ...

It really is a great social area for the Martins. They love it and all the food stays nice and dry for them . I made it so one side easily comes off for filling. This feeder would work good for the Sea Gulls as well Mary. If you want more pictures of it I can get more for details.

Robin Proof Oyster Bar

Hi Folks, we are getting cold weather up here in Alberta. Windy and only 5 degrees Celsius today. Here are some pictures of my Oyster bar feeder . I had to put sides on it to keep the Robins from eating the meal worms and defending the feeder to my Martins. I feed Oyster shell, mealworms and microwa...

Thanks Mary, my Martins are eating mealworms and scrambled egg on the cooler days. They love your scrambled egg recipe. Good luck to you and everyone in Michigan this season. Keven Booms sent me some nice pictures of his site a few days ago. He now has 3 of my North Star houses. A great looking site!

All SREH work well if made to spec. It is only personal preference as to what to use. I use an equal combination of Cescent, WDC, Private Eye and Clubhouse. The Martins use them all. The Starlings hate them!

You can increase your House Sparrow success with an S&S controller by adding a Sparrow Shutter to it. You can get all the info on my Sparrow Shutter at this link. http://www.wtc.ab.ca/northernskys/shutter.htm the shutter eliminates all the escapes that the S&S controller losses.

Thanks for your reply John, we have been banding Martins up here for a number of years now, but last year was our best. Hardy banded just under 2000 nestlings here in central Alberta last summer and we hope to repeat that again this year, the bands are a fish and wildlife silver band on the left leg...

Thanks for this update John, I have always thought that our Northwestern Martins (Alberta) and other song birds take the shoreline migration route instead of crossing the gulf into Louisiana. Please keep us posted as often as you can. I think many of our Alberta Martins are migrating through your ar...

I have always used the Starter Fluid method, just make sure your not smoking when doing this. Last year I donated all my S&S to a rehabber. They called back and asked what the smell was. I told them my method for putting them to sleep........ they still fed them to their raptors. The Staring Fluid s...

 Way to Go Guys! It's great to hear your feeding is a success. I hope more landlords give it a try. Just think how many Martins that could have been saved over the years had we been feeding them. Knowing we can keep them alive is a very good feeling isn't it. As for the crickets, all you have t...

Hi Shannon, welcome to the PM Forum. First of all, you must control the House Sparrows by shooting and trapping. Do what ever it takes to get rid of them. Secondly, Purple Martins are people orientated birds. They like to be where people are, as they are more protected from other Birds like Hawks, O...

Tree and Kent, I couldn't have said it better. Good honest observations. One more thing I would like to say about Charles McEwen great Crescent invention. The SREH was a man made entrance, but so was larger deeper compartments. When we forced Martins into the 6X6 cubes the Starlings were not a great...
