Not sure what your plans are with the gourds but they make some mounting arms that allow you to hang 4 gourds under a T14. I have them on both of my T14s.

I have seen people retrofit tunnels with SREH onto natural gourds. But to me if I was going to buy tunnels, caps, etc. I would just buy plastic gourds.

agreed!!!!!!!!!!!!! these natural gourds are strictly for attraction and building my first year colony. i have some plastic ones on order and will hang them as well. will be interesting to see which ones get used the most first. natural gourds, white plastic, or the house apartments.

Ok... I'm up to 5 now every now and then. I'm pretty sure that first male that showed up has been hanging here during the day. We have dubbed him Curtis Lowe... Anywho.. he circles and calls and for 2 days I've seen 5 flying around. BUT.... There's a pir of tree swallows that fly around intermittently too. They haven't checked the houses out at all that I can tell and haven't perched or anything.
I can't see any conflict but is this anything I should be worried about?

Thanx all!!

Toad,

That's great to hear. I think we all started the same way but I started with plastic gourds. In addition to modifying my gourd rack every year, I now have a T-14 for the first time and it's getting some love this week. I'll post pictures in another thread. The excitement and feeling of success is a high for sure when you get your first Martin. And it gets better when they return every year. I baby sat mine like a mother elephant. Strangely enough, that mother elephant mentality has never left.

I, and I'm sure many others, look forward to hearing of your continued success. And we like pictures. 8)

As for gourds on the T-14 there is actually mounts made so you can put 8 gourds on it. Four at the bottom and Four at the top. Check out the gourd accessories page on the Troyer website. You'll see them. I'm going to do this next year with 4 Troyer Verticals and 4 Troyer Horizontals.

Good luck to you.

I don't want to jinx it but I think I might be in business!!! Maybe curtis lowe has been on farmers only dot com or something but a male and female came by this morning for an hour or two and the female looked in lots of apartments but she really hung on the natural gourds and poked her head in A BUNCH!
Fingers crossed they will stay the night! Lots of pine straw below the houses so maybe they'll find it.

There's a couple of starlings hanging close but every entrance I have is starling resistant. Do y'all think the starlings will just give up?

That's great to here they are really checking the place out. Watch at dusk to see if come in to spend the night. The starlings will give up and move on, but on occasion one will be able to breach the entrance. If I see them and have the opportunity, I will shoot them even when I only have sreh open. Keep us posted.

I noticed that you said lots of pine straw under the House hopefully they will find it ?? Make sure you have put plenty of pine straw in the compartments as well. One it will helps attract them and it gives them a head start on nest building. Put mud on the entrance and porch. Blast the dawn song as well. Good luck.

Wooooo! Ok I think I've got a pair! I can't tell if they stayed last night but when I walked out this morning a male was sitting on a porch making that soft trill call and I heard some scuttling inside the gourd... When he took off a.female came out of the gourd!!!!

So!!! Do I turn off my dawnsong now?

I would recommend to keep playing it and helping your existing pair draw in more birds. I believe it is said you need 6 pair to "guarantee" some will make the return migration trip so the more the better. Keep doing everything you can to grow your numbers.
