Two SuperGourd poles (12 gourds on each) at River Point Assisted Living Center.

I am a martin mentor and recently was contacted by a new mentee. They moved here about one month ago from California and along with the purchase of the home, they acquired a 16 gourd rack with Nature Line gourds in their front yard. I don't think the gourds have had martins recently but the pole is in a good location for attracting them.

The gourds have oblong openings with no access cap. Based on the condition of the gourds due to UV damage, I think they are very old. The pole and winch seem to be in very good shape.

Coming from California, they don't even know what a martin is. Right now, they are not interested in spending much money. I have convinced them to raise the gourds this season and I think they will be hooked if they establish a colony. If so, they might be willing to upgrade to new gourds next year.

I have never had Nature Line gourds. Can you comment on their plusses and minuses?

I have a few. They are kinda a pain to do nest observation as you have to take the front entrance out and look sideways. There are some people on the forum that have taken two back halves and modified a tunnel in the front and a better access port from the upper side. There not the best gourds but not the worst either. I need to check my sources but i think naturaline is out of business now.

Google naturaline gourd out of business.
You will see a blog that has a good writeup on it.
I cant put in the url here on the forum as they sell some of the same items in the pmca store.

Don't know if I can now mention S&K on here but..... What I did to the Naturelines was to order access ports from S&K and modified the gourds by adding them to the back side (that way you don't have to struggle to get that entrance out to do nest checks). Added them to the back rather than the side because the assembly seam of the gourd is on the side. Good Luck.
