I'm a strong believer of scrambled eggs. We have gone thru 25 dozen already and will do 40 more dozen.
The only problem i see is the babies grow much faster. Ive had 4 nests fledge already. Its sad but makes me somewhat proud. During these cold days my martins had meal worms crickets oyster shells and scrambled eggs. I will eliminate the crickets and meal worms
for the rest of the year. I think my babies will be down about 40 from last year. Now i have the job of yelling at hawks if the babies start jumping but so far nice fledgings. Good luck everyone and push the scrambled eggs

Jeepers !!! We are PM landlords, not PM ranchers. We provide housing only. Everything else is up to nature for our colony. (I do shoot a few sparrows and starlings every year - mostly for fun)

It's a lot different climate in Galveston than what Dick has in Ohio.

If he didn't provide food for his Martins a lot of them would perish, maybe 30% to 40%. They have cold fronts and rain that last for days at a time all the way through May.

I still can't believe he has Martins eating eggs out of a skillet on a picnic table, but he does. The only time you can teach a Martin new tricks is when he has gone without food for 3 or 4 days.

That is different. Our back yard is a dragon fly paradise. There are at least a hundred over the lawn every day. The PMs just swoop out of their houses, nab a dragon fly and zip right back to the babies. The only safe dragon flies are the 2 dozen or so that hug our house and the nearby trees. It makes me wonder why the PMs would even go up north to nest?

You have to remember that even though the pms have all the dragon flies they could want they lose much weight and get worn out by constantly flying and feeding the babies. If your a true landlord you will suppliment the feeding with crickets meal worms and scrambled eggs, plus egg shells and oyster shells.
Remember that by the time the little babies fledge, they are actually bigger than the parents.

None of us who live along this part of the bay do anything more than provide housing. I am the only one that bothers to shoot a few sparrows and starlings. To each his own.

Why didn’t you just write, if you don’t manage your Martins like I do then you need to take down your Martin houses because you’re wrong and I’m right? You may be a great landlord but your condescending attitude is disgusting. I also hope that people realize that in 2016 you didn’t have 100 pairs of Martins and fledge 600 nestlings. That isn’t possible and didn’t happen.
Martin landlord since 2003. Currently offering 162 plastic gourds with tunnels, all with Conley II entrances with the Lewis modification. I have 24 Supergourds and the rest are Troyer Horizontals.

Now Now To each his own. If he wants to be a PM rancher it doesn't hurt at thing. I simply wonder what happens to colonies that have been pampered when the highly motivated humans move on?!?!?!?!?

I’m with Brad on this one to me all the tall tales are disgusting and may be misleading to folks that are just starting up and are still learning about martins.
